Liverpool’s international tournament stars could miss the first game of the season as they get a well-deserved break

Liverpool have a number of players who have been away with their national teams this summer after a gruelling Premier League season, and they could miss the opening game of the 21/22 campaign.

Thiago Alcântara, Jordan Henderson, Alisson Becker, Fabinho, and Roberto Firmino may be absent for Liverpool’s Premier League clash vs Norwich City on August 14.

Brazil have reached the final of the Copa America and Spain and England are in the semi-finals of the Euros (at a minimum), meaning that the key players in those teams will have yet to have a significant period of rest since the beginning of last season.

According to the Liverpool Echo, all of these players will be given a 3-week break at an absolute minimum, with Jurgen Klopp and his team eager to maintain a fit squad throughout the upcoming season.

The Euros and Copa America finals are set to be played on July 10 and 11 respectively, and the players returning to England would only arrive on August 9 if they are given 4 weeks off instead of just 3.

This return date would leave the players just 5 days before they are expected to take to the field at a now full Anfield, which Jurgen Klopp will almost certainly consider to be too short of a time for them to train properly.

Alisson will probably still start the opener, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see Klopp make some changes to allow the international stars to have some more rest.
